The Sphere Project

Explore the evolution of the Sphere speaker by Littlecat Labs, from its inception in 2015 as a fully 3D printed design, to its current form wherein the patent-pending spiral reflex port is encased in a 5.5” clear polycarbonate shell. Engineered around a top-shelf full-range driver from legendary audio component manufacturer ScanSpeak, the design leverages the power of 3D printing to modify the linear shape of a traditional bass reflex port such that it forms the shape of a triple helix, expanding the acoustic capacity of the port and literally increasing the theoretical limit for the amount of bass output it is physically possible to achieve from a speaker of a given size. In other words: no speaker so small has ever sounded so powerful, realistic and detailed.

What began as something between a science experiment and a joke in the summer of 2013 has become a treasured design project, and perhaps one day a future product. This gallery documents the history of the project from the creation of the first Littlecat prototypes in 2014, through many iterations after that, eventually settling on the silhouette that was granted a United States Design Patent by the USPTO in 2015.

An early version of the triple-helix sphere was used in an experimental line-array configuration to provide live sound for several DJ sets at Princeton, NJ’s legendary Terrace F. Club.

Littlecat Labs had a booth at the Maker Faire NYC from 2014 - 2017. The Faire was always the highlight of the year - we wish we had more pictures.
